How to Discover Where All Your Time Goes
The secret to discovering where all your time goes is so simple that you'll probably smack yourself upside the head when you read it.
To discover where your time goes, track it.
Track what you're doing at work and how long it takes. Track your commute. Track the time you spend watching Game of Thrones. Track it all.
When you begin tracking your time—especially if you use a calendar—you create a clear picture of how you spend it. You know, with very little wiggle room, how much time you spend with your kids, how much time you spend in the car, how much time you spend on work tasks that drive you beyond mad, and how much time you have to yourself.
This method comes from time management expert Laura Vanderkam. In I Know How She Does It: How Successful Women Make the Most of Their Time, Vanderkam writes
Most of us don't know how many hours we devote to different things. We don't know how many hours we work or sleep or watch TV ... A time log reminds [us] that a day has 24 hours, and a week has 168. No matter how amazing we are, all of our activities must, and do, fit within these bounds.
